Welcome to my homepage!
Here you will find resources that can help students and parents learn
more about our class activities as well as access resources
that can build academic skills.
It has been a wonderful start to a new school year. I am Eric Mitchell (D.Ed.Min) and am enjoying every moment of teaching 1st grade here at White Hills Elementary. I am married to another teacher, Barbara Mitchell, who is an Inclusion Teacher at Southdowns Pre-K in Baton Rouge. We have three children, Tiffany, Danielle, and Jon.
Teaching has quickly become one of the greatest experiences of my life. While I am relatively new to the teaching world, guiding and nuturing children has always been one of my greatest investments. My mission is simple: Encourage my students toward success through affirmation and inspire them to reach for the stars. Whether it's in Math, Reading, Science, or Social Studies, it is amazing to see their face light up when they 'catch' a new concept. It makes all the effort worthwhile!
Thanks for stopping by to visit our site. Please take time to look around and email me if you have any questions!
Encouraging all,
Mr. Mitchell

Standard Weekly Projects Every week our students participate in a writing project. We pick an object and talk about it. We develop three sentences that describe our object. Of course, our object for last week was . . . you guessed it! The Pumpkin! This week our object is The Scarecrow. In math, our students rotate each week between a RICE (Restate, Illustrate, Compute, and Explain) Problem and a Constructed Response. These are math problems which help students think through the solving process of math problems. These are collected weekly and placed in their Math Journals.
Homework Our students are expected to complete their weekly homework assignments. Please note our weekly homework sheet for daily homework in math, reading, and spelling. Parents, you are encouraged to work with your students for the reading assignment and check their other homework. Read with them. Help them with unfamiliar words. Challenge them to correct wrong answers. Let them repeat stories, words and assignments with you. Keep in mind, it is not our practice to assign homework for which your student is not already practicing in the classroom. Everything you see at home has already been introduced. Homework is simply a follow up to reinforce the concept.
Testing Students are tested every Friday in Spelling, Reading Comprehension and Math. These tests can be rigorous and challenging. We do review for each test, but you can help by doing all you can to help them be rested and ready for Fridays!!
Conference Your students education and success is so important. While I have spoken to many of you individually, if you would like to schedule a conference either by phone or visit, please call the school office at 775-5891. I will return your call and schedule a time at your convenience.
